Hybrids are the most common today. Most strains are a mix of both, and are often labeled sativa-dominant, indica-dominant, or balanced (50/50).
The sativa/indica split is a simplification. Modern research shows that a strain’s effects depend more on its cannabinoid profile (THC, CBD, etc.) and terpene profile (the aromatic compounds like myrcene, limonene, pinene) than whether it’s labeled sativa or indica.
Terpenes matter a lot. For example, myrcene tends to produce sedating effects (commonly found in indica-label strains), while limonene is associated with uplifting, mood-enhancing effects.
Bottom line
Think of sativa and indica as a useful starting framework, but not a guarantee of effects. If you’re choosing for specific outcomes, looking at the cannabinoid and terpene profile will give you a more accurate picture than the sativa/indica label alone.
